Game Map Layout And Design

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

When designing the map I focused on making sure the player would experience as much of the map as possible and give them an incentive to explore the map and risk the lives of their team and themselves. I focused on doing this by spreading out the placement of objectives also leading to more dangerous targets for fixing the car such as orange cube on the map that is right next to the enemies spawn and home.

Key-

Light Brown = Muddy Fields (Player moves slower)

Dark Brown = Dirt Paths (Player moves fast, car easily drives)

Light Grey = Buildings (Include hiding places and supplies)

Dark Grey = Rocks

Aqua Green = Water (Player can swim and creature can submerge)

Yellow = Broken down car ( Players can hide in inside and once fixed drive away in.

Orange = Car Pieces (Once all are collected and installed in car player can escape)

Red = Base of the Creatures (The main enemy and controller of the other creatures is found here)

When designing the layout of the map I looked at real world maps for reference while also going on several walks of New Forrest where the environment is based of to get the Idea of how the area works and the placement of farm buildings. Below you can see images taken from trips.

Different Environment Types

Water Areas -

When the player moves through water based environments as seen above, they will be severely slowed down when wading through. When the water becomes deep enough they will be able to swim across the water. Different Npc characters will have different swimming stats so it will be crucial for the player to observe their team and make sure they understand which characters will need moral support when entering these environments. Meanwhile the enemy characters will be able to swim under the water quickly, they will be able to be seen by the player when a blue glow starts to appear under the water from their eyes.

Paths -

Paths will be the quickest way to move around yet will mean the player and other characters are more visible to the creatures due to the lack of cover. The paths will still be very low lit so the player will still need to use torches to see in these areas.

Forests -

Forrest are one of the most dangerous areas of the game as the enemy creatures can move around the tree branches above you giving them an extra elevation over you and other NPC. It will also be very easy for the player's teammates to get lost, if the group is split up they will lose line of sight cause damage to their mental health scale. The forest will also have an adverse affect on the mental health of the NPCs decreasing their stats in that area as soon as they enter the area it.

Enemy Lair -

The Final area of significance on the map is the main spawn for the creatures and is the home of their Hive Mind leader. This location is within a Building's basement on the far side of the map and is noted on the sketch at the top of this page by the red box. It is here where the player is also able to perform a win condition by eliminating the hive mind as seen in the post above. This areas has many dangers such as the High number of enemy creatures that are living inside or the adverse damage this area will do to the NPC's Mentality scale, in some cases causing friendly characters to instantly go to the insane state and become hostile to the fellow NPCs and the player.
