Week 7 - Base Ideas Coming off Research

Coming off of my research I had several base Ideas in mind that could translate into decent game ideas. In this blog post I will go through these ideas individually, going through how I got to them through my research and possible directions to take the idea further.

World War 2 Gremlin infested Plane

Base Idea -

This was the first game that came to me during research, the idea builds off of the shared theory among pilots in the RAF that small Gremlins infested their planes and would cause malfunctions to take them out the sky. The game Idea would see you as the player take the position as a pilot on a bomber during WW2. The reason for the plane being a bomber and not a smaller aircrafts is I want the player to encounter the gremlins and try to deal with them while they are in the plane environment along with flying and manning turrets, So the best area for the game to be set in would be a bomber, as of now I'm thinking of having the game set in a Lancaster Bomber as this is one of the most iconic British bombers of the time along with the interior fitting the needs of the game.

Essential Experience -

The player overcomes the increasing amount of Gremlins and malfunctions in the plane until it reaches its destination to drop its bombs.

Gameplay Loop -

- The player is alerted to a malfunction, Gremlin, enemy plane while piloting the plane

- Player deals with the oncoming threat

- Player fixes any issues to the plane

- Player rushes back to pilot the plane and is given a few seconds to rest

Bartending For the Gremlins

Base Idea -

This game see the player take the role of a bartender, who's bar has been taken over by a group of ravaging gremlins that are in desperate need of the drink. The game would be set in first person and would see the player having to deal with the increasing amount of drink orders from the gremlins, including beers and wines, soft drinks, snacks, and cocktails. Each drink order will have a certain set of requirements to complete with beers being as simple as pouring the beer tap into a glass, unlike cocktails which will see the player have to combine several bottles of liquor on the back bar and shake them together. While this happens the gremlins wont be sitting there patiently waiting, they will be throwing stuff at the player, climbing over the bar to steal drinks and attacking each other. The player can deal with this in anyway they like with them being able to throw bottles at the gremlins, push them back over the bar or even pick them up and throw them across the bar. Once the game has given a gremlin the drink it has asked for they will be rewarded points with the goal to gain as many points as possible before last orders is called.

Essential Experience -

The player is set to take on simple tasks while having to juggle with increasing amount of unruly gremlins stopping you from completing these tasks in humorous way.

Gameplay Loop -

- certain amount of gremlins approach the bar

- player takes the order from the gremlin

- makes the drink order

- fight off gremlins while making order

- give or throw order at gremlin

- player gains points

Gremlin Vermin Exterminator

Base Idea -

This game sees the player take up the role of a vermin exterminator who's new job is to rid a building of Gremlins. Moving through tight closed corridors and room the player will encounter groups of gremlins that they must deal with. The player will have a range of tools to do this and will even be able to craft new and more unique ways as well. A lot of the entertainment will come from how these weapons effect the gremlins, with some weapons throwing gremlins across rooms, others netting them up, the possibilities are endless though it will take more testing these ideas out in game engine and see what feels the best as the player.

Essential Experience -

The player navigates through tight spaces dealing with gremlins in explosive, colourful and humorous ways while crafting and improving their exterminator from a hub area.

FPS Infested Gremlin Space Ship

Base Idea -

This game is almost a mix of the world war gremlin plane idea and the gremlin exterminator. This is a more of an experimental idea because I like aspects of both and feel like they could blend together quite well. The game would see the player be the last survivor on an interstellar spaceship, they would have to get the ship to its final location. While this is happening gremlins will move around your ship disabling parts, its the players role to keep the ship moving and take out the gremlins on board. This can be done a lot like in gremlin exterminator with a range of weapons that the player can craft though due to the sci fi setting.

Essential Experience -

The player navigates through tight spaces dealing with gremlins in explosive, colourful and humorous ways, crafting and improving their player character, while at the same time micromanaging repair jobs aboard the ship.

Gameplay Loops -

- player notices fault with ship from the control room

- they gear up with the appropriate tools and weapons for the job

- move through corridors and rooms dealing with the gremlin presence

- reach the fault with the ship

- return to the control room to keep plotting the course of the ship

Goblin Mischief Mansion Game

Base Idea -

In this game idea the player takes the role as a Goblin that has attached himself to a manor in the English country, the game is set in a 3rd person perspective and uses stealth mechanics. The game would be set over the span of a week in which the player will need to raise their mischief metre by annoying people of the manor. This can be done in a variety of ways such as destroying furniture, hiding items and causing malfunctions in the house. The player will have a central hub at the end of the day to return to and finish that days activity in the form of a hidden grotto on the grounds of the manor. The location of the manor allows for multiple routes and opportunities for the player to take, with a nice variety of rooms for the player to explore, including the lower levels of the house which would feature wine cellars and the workers rooms and kitchen, all the way to the master bedrooms and studies on the top floor.

Essential Experience-

The player has the freedom to plot their own objective and carry it out in any way possible, they have full freedom to explore the grounds and the manor. The game will allow the player to act out any level of mischief on the residents and it will be these reactions of the residents that bring the entertainment value of the game.

Gameplay Loops-

- the player awakes in their grotto

- they make their way into the manor avoiding gardeners and grounds keepers

- they sneak through the house

- perform activities that anger residents and in turn fill the player's mischief metre with xp

- when the sun begins to go down the player will be prompted to head back to their grotto and sneak out the manor

- once they've returned and gone to sleep, all xp in the mischief metre will be counted and an appropriate score will be given to the player.

Gremlin Swarm 2D Platformer

Base Idea-

The final idea is for 2D platformer, that sees the player control a horde of gremlins through a fantasy world. The player would only control a small initial amount of gremlins, but as they move through environments they will have the chance to grow this group and upgrade it with different abilities and attributes. The amount of gremlins and how you use them will be crucial to overcoming enemies and obstacles along your journey.

Essential Experience -

The player commands a group of savage gremlins through in-depth environments using their numbers to overcome enemies and obstacles while at the same time hunting for new gremlins and upgrades for their little group.

Gameplay Loops -

- Player starts with small group of gremlins

- traverses through environment

- come across enemy that is to strong to be taken down with just this small amount of gremlins

- player must either find a way to outsmart the enemy in combat or find more gremlins to add to their group.

- with the new amount of gremlins the player has enough power to overcome the guard

- the player wins the combat though loses some gremlins in the combat and must move on.
